Equine-Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP) is an experiential form of therapy that involves working with horses to support emotional growth, self-awareness, and healing. In EAP, clients engage in activities with horses, such as: observation, grooming, leading, or other structured interactions. This is conducted under the guidance of a licensed therapist and an equine specialist.
Horses are highly intuitive animals that respond to human emotions and body language. Their natural sensitivity provides immediate, nonjudgmental feedback, helping clients develop insight into their feelings, behaviors, and relationship patterns. Sessions take place on the ground, and are tailored to each client’s goals and comfort level.
EAP can help individuals:
Build confidence, trust, and emotional regulation
Strengthen communication and boundaries
Process trauma, grief, anxiety, or stress
Enhance mindfulness and connection to self and others
Equine-assisted sessions provide a unique opportunity to experience growth in a calm, nature-based environment—encouraging healing through connection, reflection, and presence.
The horses are a part of the process and are seen as therapists themselves and never used as a tool to create a scenario or scene. Horses are sentient beings and offer us great insights if we are willing to listen. This setting involves present moment awareness, connection and is somatic in nature. Working with horses may be for you if you are seeking an alternative approach to healing.
Risks and Considerations
While EAP can be deeply healing, it also carries certain risks and limitations:
Emotional discomfort: As in any therapy, difficult emotions, memories, or insights may surface during sessions.
Physical risks: Interactions with horses—large, powerful animals—carry inherent risks such as bites, kicks, or accidental injury. All participants must follow safety guidelines and instructions at all times.
Allergies or environmental sensitivities: Sessions take place outdoors, where exposure to dust, pollen, insects, or animal dander is possible.
Variable outcomes: As with any therapeutic approach, individual experiences and results vary based on personal factors, participation, and therapeutic goals.
Weather or environmental limitations: Sessions may occasionally be rescheduled due to inclement weather or unsafe footing conditions.
Safety is always the highest priority in EAP. Horses that work in therapy are carefully selected for temperament, and all activities are supervised by trained professionals who monitor both emotional and physical well-being throughout the process.
